Gibson SG Standard – 1966 Vibrola Tailpiece…SOLD !

SERIAL NUMBER: 365427
DATE: 1966

Originally called Les Pauls when they debuted in 1961, the SG was a direct replacement model for the Les Paul [ Standard ] that we know. However, Les had other ideas, didn’t like the new guitar and requested that his name be taken off of the SG. This caused a bit of a predicament for the Gibson sales and marketing team as the factory was still churning them out while they tried to come up with a new model name. In these early stages of production the designation SG ( ‘solid guitar’) ,for want of a better name, was supposed to be used as a transitory moniker, but the name SG eventually stuck.

Released with fanfare as being ‘the fastest guitar in the world’ due to its slim playable neck [ as opposed to the necks on the 'Bursts that preceded it] it went on to be one of Gibson’s most successful lines.

The pedigree of players associated with this guitar are simply legendary – Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, Robby Krieger just to name a few – and for good reason : the lightweight mahogany body makes it easy to brandish, but the PAF’s are fat enough to compensate. Blues/rock/metal/progressive all fall under weight divisions this tyke can punch in – and which makes it versatile to boot.
